Online casino operator Casumo has today been named as one of the initial 16 recipients of an online gambling licence from the Swedish gambling authority, Lotteriinspektionen.

The licence means that the oeprator can, from January 1, offer online casino as well as sportsbook in Sweden, with the latter likely to be introduced later in the new year.

The news comes in the same week that the UK Gambling Commission handed Casumo a £5.85m penalty for historical shortcomings, although the regulator did also stress that the operator had since taken steps to address the issues.

In a statement, the operator said the Swedish Gambling Authority had been made aware of this week’s decision by the Gambling Commission.

Oscar Simonsson, co-founder and CEO of Casumo, said: “Sweden is a strategic market for Casumo, in which we have been operating since our launch in 2012.

“Casumo has very high brand awareness in the market and with the levelling of the playing field and availability of new channels through which to reach players, we look forward to continuing to further grow our product offering and presence in Sweden,” he continued.

“Our strategy remains on continuing to enter and grow in regulated markets. We continue to develop our product and operations for agility, sustainability and scale in this space.”

The online operator recently began accepting Swedish krona and is working on its Bank-ID solution to deliver a superior experience to players.
